Social Media

There are lots of different social media websites. I like Facebook and Twitter. These websites are convenient because they allow you to communicate with others whenever and wherever. 

Facebook is a place to connect with family, friends and coworkers. It also helps reconnect with old friends you may not have seen in years.  You send out friend requests by searching names of people you would like to befriend. Others cannot see your page unless you accept their friend request and vice versa.  You can update a status on what you are thinking or doing. This post will be seen by people you are friends with. On Facebook you have a page that contains your posts/statuses and other people’s posts that you have shared. This is called your “Timeline”.  You also have another page where you can see what your friends have posted; this is called the “news feed”. If you see a post that you agree with then you can “like” it or make a comment so that your friend will know you’re interested.

Twitter is a social media website where users can post “tweets” up to 140 characters. These tweets are updates on what is going on in their lives. Many people use twitter including famous people, non-profit organizations, political figures, companies and ordinary people.  You choose who you do and do not follow. Anyone can follow you unless you have set your profile to private. Like Facebook; there is a page that contains your tweets. There is also a page, known as the home page that contains tweets from the people you are following. If you “retweet” a person’s post, it will automatically show up on your profile as well as your follower’s home page. A “direct message” is a private communication between two people who follow each other and will be only seen by them.

Both Facebook and Twitter let you post photos and videos. Facebook and Twitter allow you to keep up-to-date on your friend’s lives without ever having to pick up the phone! Is that a good thing? That’s for you to decide.
