Music Cures Everything
Music is food for the soul. I first became aware of music as a child. Not from daycare or school, but from my mum. At 76 years young, she is still a big music fan. She passed on that love of music to me. Many a Sunday afternoon she would play rock ‘n’ roll, R’n’B, reggae as we did the housework. It certainly made the mundane feel like it was less a chore and more like play. There are songs for every occasion and probably every emotion. Happy, sad, excitement frustration you name it there’s a song for it.
As a mother I would play all different types of music while still pregnant with my daughter. I would put headphones over my belly a see how my girl would react. Reggae made her calm and House music made her thump her foot. I even played traditional Pow Wow songs for her. Needless to say my daughter loves music. She even asked me the other day to play some of that ‘jazzy’ music she heard me playing. ‘I like that music mum. It’s cool’ is what she said to me. I enjoy bringing all types of music to her attention and seeing what resonates with her at 7 years old. I know as we age our tastes can change. I was fortunate that my mother introduced me to so many genres at such a young age. I learned to love and appreciate music I wouldn’t have necessarily been privy to from the radio. Songs can comfort us in times of sorrow, it can rally the troops when a battle cry is heard. Music can also move us to get up out of our seats and gyrate wildly as they used to say in the 50’s and 60’s. Some people don’t know what they would do if it weren’t for, music.
